Jonathon's Racing Attacks and Adventure Packs!

Amazing racing and training adventures on roads and mountainous/hilly TRAILS, freewaybikehike and triathlons. Dreams of a SIX FOOT 45km finish,(DONE 2011,2013,2014,2015!),then ULTRA-TRAIL AUSTRALIA (50km DONE 2016!), memorable Melbourne Marathon and Gold Coast racing. Over a decade dreaming of a SUB 3HR MARATHON, sub 18min 5k, sub 38min 10k, sub 90min Half marathon etc...(shattered? or still realistic?)

Survived 6 inch for 7th time (PW 7hrs.24) in 35+ degree heatwave

Mission impossible; to run 6 inch in a 40min PB in about 4.50 and so finish before my Garmin ran out of battery life. Did I choose to accept it; yes but realistically it was never really likely to happen this time, so my backup $14 Big W watch was needed to get part 3 of my time. Too busy Saturday trying to get everything organised that night, so by 0150hrs Sunday morning I knew it was time to drive to Dwellingup even though I was already tired from getting up at 3am that morning. For about the 3rd time in 8x6 inch attempts (1 DNF last year) , it was going to be the "no-sleep" "all-nighter" routine. Less than ideal, but I'm used to it so well able to make a goer of it, although it does probably make PB attempts hard, and I pay for it big time on Sunday arvo... At the start caught up with a few of the stalwarts, and had plenty of time to relax, and this time got my toilet stop done and my drinks put in for the aid station (crucial with the hot weather forecast). Had a dream start and cruised alongside Brendon, Tom, Gerry, Scott, Kevin and others.
Jon Pe. too was there running with pink floaties on his elbows I think due to a lost bet to do with last years race and puddles or something... hahaha :-) Hitting the front one more time and settling in during the first 7km; About 50m from the base of Goldmine Hill I stepped up the cadence and gapped the field one more time in the traditional manner to trailblaze them all to the base of Goldmine Hill. Hit this 140m ascent hill and then tried to settle into something more sustainable... Worked the hill ok, and then started to hit some pace again as we got close to Whittakers. Ran with 4 or 5 of the same runners for most of the next 13km, tall bloke with white shirt, women with gold top, and woman with dark blue top. At 7km Kellie and another runner came past and I couldn't go with her (she cruised to a 5.46 in the end), although I tried to for a bit. Found out later that I was 133rd of 185 runners to the KOM King of Mountain point about 1.2km? into the race in 14min 41 secs....
ATTACK, as anticipation of Del Park Rd builds on some big descents Eventually Rachel and Hanna, and Chris HP caught up, and we had a larger group of about 10 runners see-sawing back and forth. On the downhills I was thrashing them, and on the uphills I was doing a lot of walkbreaks and struggling to stay in touch with the group, on the flats I was mid-pack or near the front... This pattern persisted for about 6km, and I managed to get ahead of most of them by Del Park Rd 18km mark in about 2hrs05min, which is quicker than my 6-7 hour years I think but not as good as my 5.30 2011 year, so was on target for about 5.55-6.05 sort of pace at that point. I was working very hard to stay in this position and I didn't feel I could sustain it for much longer. Not enough medium runs/intervals, high intensity stuff in recent months... and also the minimal long runs in recent times taking their toll. Also sweating at very high levels (humidity levels about 60%), and drank over 2 Litres of drinks in the first 2 hours... My hillclimbing felt good, descents excellent, and trail running agility excellent, so the "dirt side" obsession in recent weeks paying off. Getting to Aid 1 and trying to get going again. After Del Park Rd 18km mark, I knew I had to back off as what I was doing was not sustainable and my legs were getting very heavy, but threw in some efforts again to stay ahead of (who I later found out was) Hanna until about 21km, and then cruised into the aid station at 22km in about 2.38 I think? Refilled my hydration pack with 3.3L of drinks (had already drunk 2.7L!!! ) and I knew that the heatwave weather would kick in during the 2nd half of the race and every last drop would become precious. However the trade off with that is that I added a 3kg weight to carry.... Then my garmin started playing up and the bandaid holding the watch strap together came off. I had some spares so was able to fix it, and get it working again. Link to part 1 the first 22km; http://www.strava.com/activities/100263914/overview 7:24am on Sunday, December 15, 2013; 6 inch trail part 2 Trying to keep going fixed garmin with another bandaid loaded up with 3L of drinks, walked, Kate and Rob passed me on the long hill
near the Scarp Rd and the new Munda Biddi turnoff. Ran with Lucia and a few others, Mandy... Garmin ran out of battery life Walking lots due to very tired legs but going ok... Part 2; http://www.strava.com/activities/100263906/overview The grind to Aid station 2, and then the attack through to Marrinup aid station 3, and grind to the finish 8:38am on Sunday, December 15, 2013 6 inch trails part 3 garmin flat 35-40 degrees Hard firm trail jarring my soreish knee and heel a bit. walked for a K or so. Ran and chatted a bit with someone called Mandy who said she has done Comrades 6 times and that she prefers the UP run from Durban. That was interesting and I think we did both pick up our pace for awhile so maybe it was a positive move to run with someone for a few minutes... Saw a few people going past the other way that I know. Eventually I arrived at that horrible rotten rutted hill and my legs found it a real challenge to get up it. Stopped a few times here. Aid station 2 is an oasis!!!!!!!!! Ice in hat. throw 1.5L of water over my head. Mercury heading into the 35+ zone... Down the rotten hill high five a bunch of runners (all of whom later I find out missed the cutoff, as did Mandy who must have stayed at the aid station a bit longer than me. ) Bloke in blue shirt runs past me I catch him on a gravel hill about 3km later, pass him, takes ages to get to powerlines, fingers swell up due to heat stress. SOme woman with a TRC goes past me here. Later looking at results I think her name must have been Colette. Aid station 3 is a lifesaver!!!!!!!!! Cocacola, and water do the trick (tried some sports drink but it tasted horrible, so only down a mouthful or two of that) throw another 600ml of water over my head, have just 300ml of emergency water left. Bloke in blue shirt 500m behind me. Grind planetarium/tunnel vision in the zone time... resolve to limit walk breaks to 30secs... The Marrinup Maze seems to go on for ages, use last 300ml of water. Huge emotions at the finish I've done it with 5min to spare, in 7 hours 24min 39secs.
shake about 20 hands, Ive run in every 6 inch ultra since 2005 except 2007, and finished 7 of em out of the 9 races...Bloke in blue shirt sadly misses cutoff by 1-2min... Its a personal worst by almost 2 hours, but its done, so now to recover check results, photos and then reload for 6 foot next year...Thanks God!!!!!!!!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I finish in 7.24.37 in 164th place. The last person to make the 7hrs 30min cutoff. ---------------------------------- Below is those of us who were out there for more than 6 hours but continued running into Dwellingup; Scott Bunny Finished 047 06:01:15 117 Peter Malan Finished 147 06:01:17 118 Gail Greensill Finished 099 06:01:58 119 Jim Farr Finished 082 06:04:15 120 Lee Garner Finished 093 06:04:16 121 Tania Churcher Finished 056 06:05:58 122 Shaun Maton Finished 149 06:07:37 123 Christopher Butler Finished 048 06:09:31 124 Mark Daley Finished 241 06:09:59 125 Bel Kennedy Finished 033 06:12:00 126 Hanna Beach Finished 030 06:15:18 127 Cheryl Tatterton Finished 214 06:15:20 128 Steve Jackson Finished 122 06:17:01 129 Ian Braund Finished 044 06:19:06 130 Boris Mizaikoff Finished 162 06:19:26 131 Juliette Buchanan Finished 046 06:19:39 132 Rachel Evans Finished 080 06:20:33 133 Eloise Simons Finished 203 06:20:37 134 David Johnston Finished 126 06:21:10 135 Rob Owen Finished 174 06:23:12 136 Cathy Isbister Finished 121 06:27:27 137 Steve Taylor Finished 215 06:29:23 138 Chris Hoy Poy Finished 117 06:30:22 139 Rob Donkersloot Finished 240 06:32:56 140 Reindert Van Poecke Finished 225 06:35:07 141 Rob Robartson Finished 190 06:37:21 142 Steven Bell Finished 034 06:41:50 143 Bevan White Finished 231 06:43:13 144 Carly Ruggeri Finished 196 06:46:56 145 Jai Stokes Finished 212 06:47:37 146 Anna Bergen Finished 038 06:47:45 147 Lucia Caravia Finished 051 06:47:46 148 Kat Douglas Finished 077 06:49:34 149 Thuy Tran Finished 221 06:49:35 150 Phil Baker Finished 025 06:54:27 151

Yes, great photos Jonathon. Congrats on your 7th 6" finish. Brutal conditions. Thanks goodness for the 7:30 time limit. All the best to you and the family. Hope to see you in 2014 - most likely Gold Coast and Melbourne for me. Also Blackmores - great event, that one.
